Do you stay up to date on what is happening in social media? Blink and you just might miss the latest – and how it could impact your organization. Here are five of the top recent social media news stories that we think you should be aware of:
1. Facebook data breach. Facebook has been having many challenges lately with private data being used without permission and hacking attempts, affecting between 30 million and 50 million people who use Facebook to log into other accounts. According to the company, attackers exploited a software vulnerability that enabled them to steal Facebook access tokens. These are, essentially, digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook, so they don’t need to re-enter their password every time they use the platform. Though the issue has been fixed, it is a good idea to unlink other apps where you use Facebook to log in and reset your passwords for those accounts.
2. Goodbye Google+. Do you remember the last time you used Google+? If not, you’re not alone and Google is finally taking the hint. The consumer side of Google+ is being sunset in August 2019 due to its lack of popularity, stiff competition from other social media giants and data breaches. Google+ experienced an API bug back in March of this year where approximately 500,000 user profiles were exposed. Though the consumer side is shutting down, the business side is not. This means you may want to keep your business profile on Google+ until more details emerge about how Google plans to move forward.
3. Instagram introduces Nametags. What are Instagram Nametags? They are customizable, scannable identification cards used to help you to connect with others more easily. Similar to a QR code, Nametags make it simple to follow people you meet in real life. You can even customize your own nametag with colors, emojis and selfies. You can see an example below with a quick Nametag I made for ClickDimensions.
4. Twitter timeline options. Nothing causes a social media uproar like an algorithm change. After two years of phasing out an exclusive chronological timeline, Twitter users now have the option to choose between a chronological timeline or “best tweets” timeline. Learn more about how to select the option you prefer here.
5. LinkedIn revamps Groups. LinkedIn has made improvements to the Groups platform with more visible Group features on the home page, easier accessibility for discussions, and Group activities and conversation notifications. The Microsoft-owned social platform has also removed some features such as moderators and moderation queues, leaving “owners” and “managers” as admin options. There will also be more updates in the near future!
